My work explores the area between the handmade and the mass-produced. I focus on glass as a material used in both contexts, and the form of the bottle as a vessel that simultaneously represents mechanical reproduction and skilled craft. I want to make visible a material that can easily be overlooked and underappreciated as it is encountered in the world. Most often, people look through glass and not at it.
By making large quantities of handmade bottles and subsequently removing or altering their function, I question the utility of glass in its common form. By manipulating objects that appear to be mundane, I aim to showcase the material and its role in the dialogue between mechanical reproduction and skilled craft. Generating an object that is typically understood as functional and removing its utility produces a platform for my creative expression and exploration of material and form.
